Our high school is in an urban, low-socioeconomic area in California with an extremely diverse population: Hmong, Asian, Latino, African-American and Caucasian with a student population of 3,300. Many of our students struggle outside of school, yet bring optimism and charisma to the classroom. Their families are often field workers and so have a negative perspective on farming. This garden will challenge their perspective and invite new dialogue, curiosity and learning. The culinary, health and science classes will use the garden as a hands-on learning environment to support classroom activities. School clubs will maintain the garden by planting, harvesting and (even) designing the layout. The garden will inspire new student leaders, bringing a new kind of "growth" to our school.
