Thomas Cornell Academy was created over the summer of 2011 with the intent to bring a neighborhood school to a densely populated area in a city of 200,000 residents. The school began as a PreK-Grade 3 school with 250 students. Now in our third year, the school is home to over 350 students and now goes to fifth grade. The school incorporates citizenship and academic setting goals for all students to become better citizens and students. Students are taught at the youngest levels that when you ride a bicycle you fall off and get back on. This trait is perseverance. We want our children to learn that sometimes they fall when learning. Through good effort and persevering, all children can succeed. We have a free and reduced lunch rate of over 80% and our ESL population is over 20%. The overwhelming majority of our students are minorities. Unfortunately, the school did not fare well on the spring state assessments. Scores were far below the state average. However, the anecdotal improvements in both the character and academic skills of the students are plentiful. The progress in both areas is noticeable throughout the school building.
