Most of my students wake up at 5AM. If they are not riding a bus to school, they are making breakfast, getting their brothers and sisters ready for school, and helping around the house or taking care of older family members. While I fully expect my students to be a challenge each day, it seems that school is their only time to invest in themselves. My students take school seriously for their families, who work long hours and are not home frequently, if at all for days at a time. My students also face immense social pressure including gangs and drugs. Amongst all these challenges, they come in to my classroom each day ready to learn and eager for a challenge. My job is not only to let them put their struggles aside but to ENGAGE them for a 90 minute period. My larger role is to lead them to believe in themselves, and see each day in school as an investment toward their futures in college. Developing this quality will outlast any number of math classes we could have together.
