My students are ages three through five, and need to be actively involved in the learning process. The use of hands-on materials such as puppets and puzzles greatly increase their understanding of nursery rhymes and stories. Research shows that early introduction to nursery rhymes greatly enhances reading development. Our inner city district is located in the third poorest city in the nation. Many of my students have their first, and sometimes only, experiences with nursery rhymes in my classroom. They are bright, energetic children who enjoy movement, songs, fingerplays and stories. Each week I introduce the class to a new nursery rhyme and new songs and stories. They are eager and excited when it is time for our new rhyme of the week and are proud when they can recite one all by themselves!
