My Title 1 school provides education to an under-served, very urban community in the San Francisco Bay Area. 81% of our population are on free or reduced lunch program and 100% are minority children. Although approximately half of my children are English Language Learners, I am of the opinion that ALL of my four and five year olds are in need of greater oral language skills. Most of my students have never gone to school before, so in addition to learning their numbers, letters, shapes, and colors, they are also gaining an important foundation for school and life! This is crucial for their future success as students and future citizens. As stated previously, my students are incredibly eager to learn, but are not always given the important tools in order to succeed. Most do not have books available to them in their homes, so what is offered at school makes a huge difference in their learning capacities! Having a listening station would give them hands on experiences with books!
