This year I will be teaching 40 kindergarten students in a dual-immersion setting. Half of their day will be spent in my classroom learning reading and math in English. The other half of their day will be spent learning reading and content in Spanish. The challenge I will face this year will be to creatively and effectively teach my little friends to read within the limited time block I will have. The students in our school come from a variety of backgrounds and languages. Many are new to the country having little or no language acquisition. Others come from illiterate homes where there may not be reading support. A number of my students will come from affluent backgrounds and already reading. So within the challenge of time will also be the challenge to meet everyone's needs and get them where they need to be by the end of the school year.
