As a math teacher, I need the ability to write math on my computer screen to demonstrate and model correct mathematics for students. Typing the equations and symbols that we use in class on a daily basis is cumbersome and inefficient. Ideally teachers and students would all have some sort of touch screen device, but at a minimum, math teachers need a touchscreen device. An iPad with an Apple Pencil is the most efficient option. As a math teacher, I would use this device multiple times daily to do live demo problems in class, record videos to “flip” classrooms, respond to questions with a demonstration of a problem with notation, annotate student work in Google Classroom (this can only be done on an iPad in the GC app as far as I know), etc. This device would continue to be useful as we transition back to a hybrid learning environment or even to our regular classroom environments as I would be able to screen cast the device and use it as I move about the classroom. My students would also be able to use it to present in the classroom. I am delighted to think that I could continue to use it to flip my classroom and give feedback to students via Google Classroom. Use of this device will have an environmental impact as well. As students are able to turn in assignments digitally and receive digital feedback, less paper will be used in our math courses. This is a significant reduction in the amount of paper used in our department.
