I teach in a high poverty elementary school in Illinois. Most of my students are English Language Learners and have not had many of the experiences children in other school districts have had. Even though they have many challenges to overcome, my students love to learn! They come to me each day, with excitement in their eyes. My work is very rewarding, as I work with small groups. To quote Oprah, I get to see "the AHA moments" when one of my students finally learns a new word or understands a new concept. Our school has almost 600 students, from kindergarten through 5th grade. We are a neighborhood school, so most of the students live nearby. When we have a Reading Night or PTO event, many of our families attend. Our parents want to help their children be successful. Many of them do not speak or read English, so they are limited in how much they can help them with their homework. We do our best to engage our students in the hours they are at school.
