My class is a room of 29 juniors who are in the IB program. The International Baccalaureate program originated in Europe, to provide the children of corporate employees, who move from country to country often, with a good education. It was a three year program of intense advanced classes, which students in the Lycee completed before going to college. In Europe, the lycee lasts for an additional year, which differs from the United States, where high school is for 4 years only. Therefore, the program includes a great deal of work, as it is completed within two years in the United States. Similar to the AP classes offered in the United States, the IB program includes not only twice or three times the normal amount of work as compared to a regular ed high school class, but it also includes portfolio preparation of classwork, which is rated by an outside examiner from the IB program.
