We need supplies to support Echo, a one-year old bearded dragon that was donated to our classroom. There are many benefits to having a classroom pet and it can greatly enrich the classroom experience. Throughout the school year students can help me care for Echo through feeding him, giving him treats, fresh water, or cleaning his cage. My students with no exposure to animals or nature in their home environment can see, feel, touch and make connections to the wide world of animals. For my students, observing and caring for an animal can help to instill a sense of responsibility and respect for life. Having a classroom pet for my students could bring an increased sensitivity and awareness of the feelings and needs of others—both animals and humans. Also, my students will learn that all living things need more than just food and water for survival, and they will see directly how their behavior and actions affect others. An added benefit would be that the presence of animals in the classroom tends to lessen tension in the classroom.
