My students are first graders who attend a Title 1 school in Alabama. Two-thirds of my students live in subsidized housing and receive free or reduced lunch. In many cases, their dysfunctional home life leaves much to be desired; however, they always inspire me with their love of learning and hope for the future. For instance, of my twenty students, only six live in two-parent households while the rest are raised by single-parents, aunts, or grandmothers. My class is diverse with regards to characteristics ranging from race, personality, intellectual abilities (five presently repeating first grade), as well as medical challenges, i.e. ASD (autism spectrum disorder), ADHD, diabetes, asthma, etc.
