My students are predominately African American. Most of them come from homes with many siblings. Several of them, even though they are only in the first grade, are expected to take care of their younger siblings. They come to school tired, and with baggage. The last thing they need to worry about is a pencil or a piece of paper. Having motivational sayings around them will help to encourage them. They spend a lot of their time inside. They talk about not getting to go outside because of getting in trouble, mainly at school. They have electronics to babysit them, but not adult supervision. Their families are often rivals, which is something else they bring with them to school.
