I spent multiple days recently working in one of the chairs that our county purchased for our students a couple of decades ago. The seats and backs are made of an extremely hard melamine material. They are the 3000 Series made by Virco. On the positive side, they are incredibly durable. On the negative, the slightly contoured seat and back are so hard that they begin to apply painful pressure on the tailbone and spine--so much so that the pain distracted me from my work and I had to move. I made up my mind at that moment that these chairs have got to go. If I am unwilling to sit in those chairs to do my work, I cannot punish my students by forcing them to sit on an unhealthy chair for their hour in my class. Our purpose is to educate and not to torture. The current chairs are extremely cumbersome, heavy, and easily knocked off the desks when the legs are caught by a bookbag strap or bumped by a shoulder. Students are required to place these chairs on their desks at the end of the day for cleaning. They are constantly falling on the floor because of how slippery they are which could break a student's foot, and when we stack them, they easily fall over if more than 5 chairs high. They weigh approximately 20 lbs due to the tubular steel and melamine construction materials. I spent a long time researching the best chair for my students for the price, and I carefully selected this chair which is also Amazon's Choice for "student chair". The chair is the Flash Furniture HERCULES Series 661 lb. Stack Chair with Air-Vent Back. The chairs are well-reviewed by other teachers and will be much more comfortable. Weight 11 lbs.
