All of my students are Hearing Impaired and their hearing losses range from mild conductive loss to profound sensorineural loss. Some wear hearing aids, benefit from the use of FM systems, and have many classroom accommodations. They attend public school in rural areas of South Carolina. These children have struggled their entire lives in the educational setting. Many receive resource/hearing impaired/speech services, but continue to have educational gaps due to their hearing loss. Research confirms that a visual mode of instruction is more successful with these students. Interactive white boards and iPads have proven to provide the visual tools these students need to comprehend and process information. Due to their hearing loss, this visual mode of learning is necessary for success. The iPad will provide this visual strategy as well as auditory learning with many of the apps available today. IPads not only make learning fun, but help to narrow the educational gaps in my hearing impaired students.
