This is an obstacle we have all faced and overcome because someone took the time to help us and arm us with the tools we needed to progress. The children in my class now stand at the same barrier you and I traversed long ago. But unlike you and I, the circumstances of their lives mean that they must carry loads of baggage with every step they take. Their special education needs coupled with the socio-economic realities of their neighborhood, make it more difficult, and even more imperative that they make progress in literacy to ensure a lifetime of success. Currently in second and third grade, my students are reading an average of two years behind grade level. Without additional and early intervention beyond what I can currently offer the students in resources and time, it is likely that the literacy gap will continue to grow and all facets of their education and lives will be affected. But don't worry, you can help!
