We are a K-4 public school. We have 36 students in a multicultural, bilingual program. Our students in first grade must learn to read English fluently at 75+ words per minute to ensure readiness for second grade. We test the students with a district fluency test three times per year. We've seen a lot of growth with our computer software that teaches the students to read along with the computer. The opportunity for individual instruction is key to improving their abilities. We have many students come from families that speak a language other than English. The only quality reading time they receive is time spent in the classroom. We have students showing growth every week. I've noticed that towards the end of first grade, students show the most growth in the fluency area. I love to see the students excel. Our adult style headphones just don't hold up. Simply having the equipment in working condition would thrill our students! They love to see their fluency levels improve each week.
