My students attend a public elementary school in a community that has been severely impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Many of my students have been displaced from their homes and a few have lost all their personal belongings. Additionally, we have been displaced from our classroom to accommodate the merging of two schools due to inhabitable buildings. Although the students and their families are struggling to rebuild their lives, they continue to come to school determined and eager to learn. Although all the students in our building struggle daily in the aftermath of this disaster, my students face obstacles and difficulties in their lives each day. Although we work diligently to draw upon their strengths and creativity, my students often face frustration and failure in school. Even with these difficulties, they are a very special unique group of students who love learning and try their very best every day.
