I teach 22 kindergarten students in a high-poverty area of Maine. With all the challenges they face outside of school, there seems to be even more they face inside of school with higher learning standards. I have a variety of learning levels within my classroom. Most of my class is made up of energetic boys that want to move, build, and play games. I ask you, "Why shouldn't they?" Most of my literacy stations consist of fun games I've made by hand or purchased over the past ten years I've taught here. They love those hands-on games the best because they engage them through multiple senses. These children need to be children and play and explore their environment. Children need to engage their minds by using their senses. Hands-on activities provide this level of engagement and motivate them.
