My classroom is currently home away from home for 28 gifted 5th graders. These scholars have a love of learning that is evident in the briefest interactions and a compassion and caring for each other unlike any classroom I've been privileged to be a part of. Sawyer is proud to met the need of their gifted students by offering a rigorous, accelerated program that nurtures these students' abstract thinking skills. My classroom is 95% latino and my students have an incredible depth of understanding of the world around them; despite their knowledge of an unjust world, my students are ambitious and hopeful for both themselves and their peers. I offer this glimpse at their innovation: a young man in my classroom without a set of Pokemon cards of his own took to developing a construction paper deck with carefully drawn pictures and neat labels for important stats such as power, resistance and health points. :)
