Our second grade is made up of 98 students who all has suffered from HURRICANE SANDY and all come from diverse backgrounds. The majority of the students in the second grade, speak English as their second language. Many of these English language learners find it difficult to participate successfully in our literacy activities. We need to provide ways for my students to learn the use of the English language in order to read, write and speak effectively. The best practice we can provide for me to enrich my classroom with language experiences. Through interactive read aloud, we can model how to read with voice, discuss how authors use the craft of writing to show emotion, and how to orally tell a story from beginning to end. Studies show that growth in reading positively impacts students' writing. It is easier to read and write the words one understands. Using the mentor text will support our ESL students in both the reading and writing process.
