We are an integrated, general and special education class. Our school is located in a New York City urban neighborhood. The families we serve are diverse in background and the neighborhood is rich in ethnicity and culture. The children in my class have some deficits educationally that our school is attempting to meet through a supportive curriculum based on the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People through a program called the Leader in Me that instills a culture of leadership. The lessons involve habits from Steven Covey's book The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. The 7 Habits are infused within the academic curriculum content within instruction times at our school. It is my hope that children leave my classroom with a sense a accomplishment and the motivation to pursue successful paths and the drive to embrace education as a means to enrich their lives.
