I have a total of 28 eager 4- and 5-year-old learners in my classes. They are the lucky ones who were selected in a lottery to attend a free public pre-kindergarten program within the local K-5 elementary school. My students love to come to school where they can become prepared for kindergarten entrance. We focus on social skills, motor skills, and language development in a hands-on, experiential setting. We live in a rural area and the children come from diverse backgrounds and a variety of socioeconomic circumstances. Children today are very tech-savvy and are quite comfortable with technology. Yet, they often lack the life experiences that make for a well-rounded education. Remember the days of finger paint and coloring for hours? Many of my students have never drawn a picture or held a pencil before coming to school. They can play a video game, but can't write their name or draw a person.
