My classroom is a diverse classroom of varying exceptionalities, language abilities, and academic levels. I have 17 first grade students. Five of those students receive language support. Four of the students are severely below grade level in reading, writing, and math. They come from hard working families that struggle to make ends meet. Some of my students exceed the grade level expectations and need a challenging curriculum to help them to continue to soar academically. While there is support from volunteers, every year the number of families that can donate supplies or their time have begun to dwindle. More families are struggling to provide and are unable to give like they could in the past. Our district is faced with severe budget cuts and the students have less and less updated resources and materials. Amongst all the challenges the boys and girls work together to support and care for one another. They have outstanding personalities and make each day a joy to be there.
