I am requesting an iPad with Apple Pencil so that I can better help remote learners with both reading and writing skills. Some time after moving to online learning, I saw a video of a teacher making notes and annotations on an iPad for her students in real time. I was blown away by how effectively this strategy could help the teacher model the thinking process, and provide a more personal touch in her instruction during a time when everyone is more removed from school. In the age of the Covid-19 pandemic, providing meaningful written feedback on student writing is all the more critical, both for academic growth and teacher-student relationships. At present, I provide feedback on student work through an automatic system on Google Classroom. This is a highly impersonal system that makes it hard for students to grow from teacher feedback on writing assignments. With the technology to make handwritten notes and communication on student writing, I can provide feedback in ways that students will more readily absorb. It is also far more personal to see these notes in a teacher's handwriting, which is all the more important when schools are closed and kids are isolated from their school communities. Another important use for this technology will be to make handwritten notes and annotations on texts that we read in class. A proven strategy in reading comprehension is annotating the text through all manner of handwritten notes. The best way for a teacher to help develop this skill in students is to model it for them. While in the classroom, I would usually do this on a projector to have students follow along in real time. Having this technology at-hand would allow me to teach students this necessary skill even while they are learning at home.
