I have fourteen 3rd and 4th grade students. They come from very low socioeconomic households; on top of that 12 of them are English language learners; on top of that each them have learning disabilities and are working at a 1st to 2nd grade level. The obstacles they face with each of those factors combined are huge. They come to school each day and strive their best to learn. They believe in themselves and gain a great deal of self-esteem from every goal they meet. Each discovery that we learn about the world around us is exciting and new; and leads to a greater desire to learn more. In order to do so, we NEED to learn to read. These charismatic students are quickly approaching middle school. Their struggles will vastly deepen if they do not raise their reading levels. I am fearful of what may happen to the sprit, work ethic and desire to learn if this group of students does not receive the interventions necessary to help them read to learn.
