My students are in grades K-5 and they are mine because they have difficulty reading. They attend a very small, rural school and come to my class for specialized instruction in reading. All of my students want to read better and most try very hard to improve despite on-going struggles. Some of these wonderful kids have begun to see improvement in their skills and have started to enjoy the stories they read. They are learning to take pride in their improved fluency and comprehension but more success is possible with more practice at home. Many of them have parents who are unable to read with them at home, due to work, unwillingness, or their own inability to read. Many have siblings who have never been read to or been able to enjoy a book and its magic at home, curled up in their own beds. Many just don't have interesting books or colorful magazines to entice them to want to read or practice at home. How terrible to imagine a home without a messy pile of books!
