I teach 18 smart, energetic Kindergarteners at one of the lowest 40 performing schools in Washington, DC. My students come from diverse backgrounds and mostly low-income families. About half of my students are English language learners and some only moved here a few months ago. Many left family members in their home countries to move to the United States. Additionally, our school is an extended school year school, so my students are in school longer than a traditional school year. This year students will be in school until the middle of July, in order to maximize instruction time, provide meaningful enrichment opportunities, and reduce the summer slide.
