My students are 4th and 5th graders with learning disabilities. Each day they face many distractions while reading. Our school is right next to a railroad track and everyday at 10:00 we get to listen to what we call the "Reading Train's" continuous whistle blow. This is just one distraction my students deal with. We are currently at a medium poverty level and that level is rising each year. My students have many obstacles to overcome in and out of school. Just recently they have discovered that reading can take them anywhere in the world. If we can limit the noise distractions with headphones, my students will have a great opportunity to increase their independent reading comprehension skills.
