I teach general music to students in Kindergarten through 6th grade at a school in Iowa. Our school has an ELL (English Language Learner) program and a diverse student population with 70% minority students. About 73% of our students qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. In the music classroom we work to build basic music skills and to have fun and meaningful music experiences together. Skills that we work on include singing, music reading, performing rhythmic patterns, playing barred instruments and a variety of unpitched percussion, and learning about the role of music in different cultures and in our own lives. The music room is a safe place for students to express their ideas, build confidence, and learn what it means to be part of a team.
