I work in a school that has a majority of African-American students; however, we have few books in our curriculum that reflect our students' backgrounds. My school consistently falls short of our reading proficiency targets, and I do not think we can make a dent in our numbers until we alter our students' perceptions of literature. Many of them may respect reading in the abstract, but they don't really believe that a book has much to offer them. I think I have found an exciting new novel that will connect them to the world and inspire them to learn more about it.
