I am in charge of educating the minds of eleven amazing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade students who have special needs. Their sensory, attention, and hyperactivity issues play a large role in their lack of academic and social growth. There are a multitude of reasons for their deficits that require special accommodations and modifications to the school environment, in order to find success. By the time students are identified as having a disability, that requires a special education, many students are frustrated and shut-down. In my classroom, it is a chance to get them to enjoy school again. It needs to be fun and exciting! The students have to be met at their academic level. They have to work together as a team within my classroom. Our school is a Title I school. This means that we have a large number of children from low-income homes. Our school also has a high population of students who qualify for special education services from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
