Berkeley High School serves a widely diverse student body and the kids in my video production classes reflect the full range of that diversity. They are in grades 9-12 and they come from all walks of life; I teach the children of UC Berkeley professors and the children of working class parents all in the same classroom. Many of them are not at all media literate; they consume the abundant media with which they are saturated passively and without critical thought. Others have a superficial understanding of rhetorical techniques used in film, television and other media but they have much to learn in order to fully understand the ways in which media influences (and is influenced by) identity, culture and society. It is my job to guide them to true media literacy.
