Washington Irving High School’s qualifies as a Title 1 school with a poverty rate of 68%. 91% of the student population consists of underrepresented minorities in (STEM) careers. For most of the last ten years we have had a robotics club which has competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition in NYC. As a faculty facilitator of the robotics club I have seen students who had never manipulated tools or written a line of programming, design and build a complicated working robot. One of our last year’s senior team members has already changed her college major from art to computer science and another discovered that she had a real gift for designing and building robots. When students succeed where they had no expectations, their confidence expands and they realize that there are new opportunities available to them.
