I teach preschool and kindergarten in a very rural area in Maine. We are a consolidated school, housing preschool through eighth grade. Due to severe cuts in our budget, we are unable to purchase new materials and our students are unable to have amazing, hands-on, learning experiences such as this project. My students have a natural curiosity about living things in their world. Building on this curiosity, students can develop an understanding of biology through direct experiences with living things, their life cycles and their habitats. Many believe students learn best by interacting with the world through listening, observing, experimenting, and applying their knowledge to real-world situations.
