Our school is Title I, meaning a large percentage of our students come from families living below the poverty line. All of our students qualify for free cafeteria meals, and over half of our students speak English as a second language. Students in my classroom are enthusiastic, hardworking, and precious. Often they do not want to leave school for breaks and weekends. School provides them with structure and a place to feel safe and successful. My students have high academic needs and, because many of them do not own books, it's hard for them to improve literacy outside of school. At this point in their education, the amount of time spent reading is most important for their academic success.
