Our school serves a high poverty population with approximately 25 percent of our students speaking English as their second language. There are more than 10 languages spoken in our classrooms, halls, cafeteria and playground. It gives our school wonderful diversity, yet is a hurdle for these students who are learning English as well as new academic skills. Many of our students come from families who struggle to make ends meet. Backpacks, school supplies, warm jackets, and lunch money are all costs that are difficult for these families to pay. Despite the hurdles that our students have to jump in order to succeed, they have shown that they are up for the challenge with rising test scores over the last few years.
