This project will provide every 8th grade student with a copy of their own novel to utilize during distant learning in the fall. This book will help student navigate the history of racism and racist ideals and their role in creating change!!! Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You by Jason Reynolds and Dr. Ibram X. Kendi explores the legacy of racism throughout the entire history of the United States of America. Further, it spotlights the work of antiracists and those who have resisted the racist ideas and policies that shape this nation. A quick glance at textbooks used in classrooms across the country reveals the paucity of pages devoted to teaching about the origins of racism. And among these pages are obscured narratives that belie the realities of racism, as recent headlines demonstrate. Stamped unveils this reality, which has often been hidden from students, by deconstructing false narratives and providing a comprehensive discussion of the history of race and racism in America. Novel units are a HUGE part of my ELA classroom. I use them for whole class instruction, in small groups, and for independent reading in order to gauge my students’ understanding of a text, as well as encourage them to dig deeper into what the author is sharing through the characters, setting, and story elements. My goal is that my students have books in their hands and can’t wait to read them from cover to cover. Sometimes that is easier said than done.
