My high school is situated in a small town in the south. Incomes are low, education levels are low, and too often expectations are low. Yet, many students aspire to be college graduates. They are talented, promising high school juniors and seniors on the cusp of entering the world of college or work. Most students' parents never attended college, and some parents never finished high school, so academic language is foreign to these aspiring students. Add the prevalence of casual, slang-ridden, grammatically disastrous internet and personal communications and you have a recipe for an academic illiterate. So much business and academic communication happens electronically today that it is crucial for students to understand the rules of such communication. Just because writing takes place electronically doesn't mean the level of formality shouldn't be suited to the audience and purpose. The medium should not determine the message.
