My pre-k students fundamental need is to feel safe and comfortable. It is important that they enter an environment that is warm, inviting and calming. This will ease a lot of the emotional and separation anxiety they feel in coming to school for the first time. Once they realize they are loved, valued and safe, teaching and learning can take place. In previous years, I have had very colorful classrooms with primary bold colors. Research has shown that bright colors like red can actually cause students to be excited and over stimulated. As my students learn to address their emotions and identify ways to stay in their executive state, their environment should reflect it with a new carpet, tree seat, a canopy and bulletin board decor.
