My school is home to 99% of children who live in poverty and single parent households and my 25 first graders are a part of that population. They are academically and socially challenged, but always try to do their best. They look forward to read aloud daily, and by the end of the year love to read themselves. I want to create a safe, nurturing, beautiful environment for them to thrive in. I want them to walk into an attractive classroom where they feel respected, and valued, in contrast to the choppy, churning waters many navigate during their daily lives.
