I have been a classroom teacher for seven years and this is my first year as a speech and language therapist. I provide speech and language therapy for several grades and age ranges of children with various disabilities. One of the hardest groups of children I work with is the children with Autism. They are hard to work with because I feel that I cannot effectively communicate with them in traditional ways. Some children with Autism Spectrum Disorder are verbal and can have full conversations. Other children with ASD are nonverbal, speaking very few words or utterances. It is these children who are difficulty to help. As a first year speech therapist, I have consulted and shadowed many SLP colleagues in my district. I often ask them how they are able to make speech and language progress with their children with Autism. They typically respond with statements about Apple's iPad and how beneficial it is as a tool to understanding and working with children with Autism.
