I teach high school Agricultural Sciences. My students study Chemistry and Animal Anatomy; they really love Agricultural Biotechnology. Over the years I've found that by reading excerpts from great books I can get them hooked on aspects of science in ways that text books cannot. I often lend out my books and they often come back looking for more. My project idea started after hearing about a high school that had a specific science reading club that encouraged students to read for pleasure in science. Studies showed that this 'side reading' helped students excel across the board from science to reading and even problem solving. Students who read had a more compassionate world concept, they tied their personal interests to their own learning goals and asked better questions in the science classroom. As a science teacher and a science reader I know how a great book can ignite great conversation. I want my students to read beyond textbooks, I want them to be readers for life.
