If I could only choose one word to describe my students, I'd choose the word "resilient." It would be easy for my students to give up. All but two of my 80 students are learning English as their second language. Though the average 5th grader enters our Title 1 school more than a grade level behind in reading, my students are two to four years behind when they arrive. (I teach small-group, remedial classes.) But my kids refuse to give up! They know learning English is a process, a process they can speed up by reading as many books as possible. My students (40 from 5th grade, 30 from 6th, 10 from 7th and 8th) are bright, and they are more excited to read and learn than any group I've had before. I usually have several children hang back after class to ask me about new words they heard or bug me to know when we'll get more books. I can hardly get books into their hands fast enough!
