I have a classroom of 18 very diverse students. I have ten boys and eight girls. The school is a high poverty school where all of the students receive free lunches. They all have different interests and needs. This year I have implemented the Daily Five component into my literacy time. The Daily Five consists of five areas of reading instruction. Reading to yourself, read to someone, writing, word work, and listening. School started in August and I transferred to this school on September 10th. I started using the Daily Five right away. The students LOVE being able to take ownership in their learning. My students can now read independently for 14 minutes, which is Fabulous for First Graders!! The problem I have is that I do not have a listening center for them to listen to books. Being able to listen to reading inspires them to read and is a great model of fluent reading, plus the students love to have stories read to them.
