Many of my students begin the year believing they can't draw, paint, or do anything related to art. However, during the year, they are able to practice their artistry and self-explore not only with their talents but also with new materials and techniques. The confidence in their capabilities and in their social interactions grows drastically. We are a first year elementary charter school in Detroit with limited funds. My students are primarily African American and from low-income families. My students love to laugh and get their hands dirty. Their greatest passion in art is definitely working with clay and painting. The tactile and moldable nature of clay allows my students to be in control for that moment in time. They have developed into young artists who take pride in their own work and that of their peers. They have grown into a community of artists that are hungry for knowledge and creation.
