Video games, cell phones, movies, computers...books have some pretty stiff competition these days. So when a child asks, "Do you have any more of THOSE books?" you can't help but jump at the chance to fuel their desire to read. I teach eighth grade English in a high-need community, and many of my students have reading skills that are below grade level. The reason for this is simple: they do not practice enough. Our school's poorly funded library just isn't capturing the students' interest and reading for school has become a chore - not something one does for enjoyment. But when a child does find that book that he or she loves, that child will read. And read. And read!
