This year I have 175 soccer-loving, hard-working 8th graders! They are the "seniors" of middle school and some are starting to realize it! They are great students, but many do not consider English their first language and they are already starting with a disadvantage when it comes to what all is required of them by the State of Texas. They attend a Title 1 school, most are on free/reduced lunches, and come from single parent or broken homes. My students have already overcome many obstacles just by staying in school this far, but they need help every day of the week staying motivated and engaged. With many of them not being comfortable with the English language, learning US History can seem like an almost unattainable task. Now, add learning this history without printouts, notes, or a computer screen for individual use. That is the battle they are currently up against. They are taking it in stride, but many are quickly falling behind as we all try to make this work!
