In my class, I have 18 smiling first graders who are loosing teeth left and right. These kids come to school with a passion to learn. These kids love to read! They are fascinated in learning about anything and everything about the world around them. In October, I was teaching a nonfiction unit on Bats. They were amazed to learn about the Vampire Bat, who actually drank animal blood. They went straight home that night and told their moms, dads, and siblings. My students reading levels range from a kindergarten level to a second grade level. We have such a wide variety of reading levels in my classroom, they are having a difficult time finding nonfiction books that are on their level. With the new Common Core Standards, there is a big push for students to be reading more nonfiction books in the early grades.
