My students are English Language Learners from a low-income area just outside of New Orleans. In kindergarten through second grade alone there are around 60 ELLs. Most of them are Hispanic, but there are also many who are Vietnamese, and others from countries ranging from Haiti to Bangladesh. They are all from immigrant families. My students are some of the most dedicated people I know. They not only work hard to become bilingual at a young age, but strive to achieve academically; which they do, and they do it in a new country. They do it despite facing some of the toughest adversity Americans face. With all of the excuses in the world not to succeed, they rise above and work hard to live out the dreams their families came here to fulfill.
