My 1st graders are in urban Illinois. Though as with any student at that age, they appreciate structure and routines. Little do they realize that the folders and journals for a particular subject are causing them to be organized. Each day they develop more understanding of where things go an why. It's heart warming to have a child asked what they missed if they were absent. Our goal would be to label the trays with names and photos. Assigning a couple of students to distribute materials to our "mailbox" would increase reading. Even though it's just a name at this age it is the foundation of letter recognition and letter-sounds. We all need a place to call our own and to develop organization.
